Energy saving devices in ship propulsion

An attractive way to increase the propeller efficiency is by means of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs). Given the improved accuracy of the hydrodynamic numerical models, ESDs have started to develop rapidly. There are many types of ESDs which differ in shape and position on the ship, but the goal of any kind of such device is to reduce the amount of kinetic energy losses around the ship propeller. This paper presents state-of-the- art in the field of ESDs. Overview of ESDs is given with the discussion addressing their effectiveness, classification, hydrodynamic design, and structural integrity.
