The Challenges of exhibiting ethnographic costumes: Interinstitutional project of replacing display mannequins in Ethnographic Museum of Dubrovnik

The textile collection of the Ethnographic Museum in Dubrovnik contains a wide range of dresses and costumes from Croatia and neighboring countries. Until recently, the costumes were displayed on mannequins made by the academic artist Lončarić Riba. His vision was to create artistic sculptures of expressing forms constructed from fiberglass, wood, metal, acrylic paint, and other visually appealing materials. For a long time they were considered protected artwork of the museum’s permanent exhibition, but had a very harmful effect on the costumes displayed. After completing a series of conservation projects within the collection, in 2018 it was decided to gradually replace the existing mounts with new, museum- quality mannequins. Two project-based learning workshops were organized and led by a team of textile conservators from the University of Dubrovnik and Croatian Conservation Institute, in cooperation with a museum curator from the Ethnographic Museum. It was a great education and training opportunity for the students and colleagues from other institutions to practice the methods of costume mounting and developing new solutions to display unique textile objects. This case study highlights the challenges of exhibiting diverse ethnographic costumes by showing past presentation methods and implementing new solutions that are in accordance with the modern conservation profession.
