ETHICAL ASPECTS OF THE USE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FEED IN LIVESTOCK

In 2019, 190.4 million hectares of biotech crops were planted by up to 17 million farmers in 29 countries. Over 70% of harvested genetically modified biomass is fed to food-producing animals, making them the primary consumers of genetically modified crops for the past 20 years. However, genetically modified crops serve primarily as feed for livestock and put tremendous pressure on the environment. In this paper, we will analyse the following issues. First, how the transformation of livestock driven by genetically modified feeds leads to unsustainable practices that negatively affect climate change, lead to environmental degradation and harm the welfare of farm animals. Second, we analyse the significant increase in the use of glyphosate in the sowing of genetically modified crops and the increase in the residues of glyphosate in the human and livestock food chain. Third, we will give a brief overview of animal feeding trials studies through the impact of glyphosate on animal health and welfare. In conclusion, we will highlight the ethical questionability of using the genetically modified feed in livestock.
