Enzyme reaction engineering as a tool to investigate the potential application of enzyme reaction systems
It is widely recognized and accepted that biocatalysis is an exquisite tool to synthesize natural and unnatural compounds under mild process conditions. Still, a lot can be done to better understand these processes, to detect their bottlenecks, and aid in resolving them. This is exactly the purpose of enzyme reaction engineering, a scientific discipline focused on investigation of enzyme reactions with the goal of bringing them closer to implementation at industrial scale. Even though reaction schemes of enzyme reactions seem simple in many cases, in practice the interdependence of different variables is unknown, very complex and may prevent further application. Thus, in this work important aspects of implementation of enzyme reactions are discussed using simple and complex examples, along with mathematical modelling principles that provide explanations why some reactions do not proceed as we plan.
