Diel variability of iron in the estuarine surface microlayer – a preliminary study
Surface microlayer (SML) may act as an important agent for the concentration, cycling and transport of iron in estuarine and coastal areas. In this preliminary study we aimed to determine the levels of [Fe]T and [DFe] in the surface microlayer in the Krka River estuary and to evaluate its variability in short period of time (16 hours). The influence of wind speed and wind direction, as well of organic matter quantity and composition on its accumulation and variability in the SML was also examined. The intensive SML samplings (every 2 hours) in two sampling campaigns (July and September 2020) provided several insights into the factors influencing iron dynamics at the microlayer. Pronounced diel variability of iron within the SML highlighted the flaws of discrete sampling and emphasized the importance of carefully designed sampling campaigns in dynamic areas such as estuarine environment.
