The P-T-t Variscan metamorphic path at Mt. Papuk (Croatia, Tisia Mega-Unit)
The area of Mt. Papuk in Croatia is primarily known as a Variscan igneous and metamorphic terrane (Tisia Mega-Unit) with recognizable traces of pre-Variscan and Alpine orogenies. However, data on the timing and P-T evolution of the Variscan event are still scarce. The key Variscan metamorphic profile, 6 km long, trending N-S at the southwestern flank of Mt. Papuk, preserves an almost complete Barrovian regional metamorphic sequence from lowgrade chlorite schists to medium-grade mica schists to high-grade gneisses, migmatites and deformed S-type granites. These rocks show schistosity and a mid- to coarse-grained granolepidoblastic texture. The schistosity is defined by the preferred orientation of elongated feldspar grains, mica (biotite and muscovite)-rich domains and quartz ribbons. Feldspar and quartz are the dominant minerals, followed by biotite, white mica, staurolite and almandine-rich garnet in the mediumto high-grade rocks, whereas chlorite predominates along with muscovite and albite in the low-grade rocks. Accessory minerals observed along the profile include zircon, apatite, monazite, xenotime, epidote, allanite, ilmenite, rutile and titanite. Electron microprobe dating of monazite revealed two age peaks at 375±9 and 338±12 Ma. The derived clockwise P-T path reached maximum P-T values of 0.9-0.95 GPa and 610 °C followed by exhumation to ca. 15 km depths (0.4-0.5 GPa) at 635 °C, accompanied by melting. The geothermobarometric data obtained support a convergence-related environment and tectonic exhumation with later intrusion of Carboniferous granites.
