Chemical Stability of Electric Furnace Slag
Large volumens of slag occur as a by-product in the process of steel and iron casting and their further usage or more disposing reguired monitoring of its impact on the environment. The paper has investigated the chemical composition of previous and final samples of medium carbon steel cast, grey cast, and austenite manganese steel cast, chemical composition of slag obtained in the stated casting processes, slag morphology and cast microstructure. Methods of atomic absorption spectrometry and ionic chromatography were applied to determine the ion Na+, K+, Ca+2 and Mg+2 in eluates obtained by in the mixtures of slag and acid rain, i.e. slag and distilled water. Elution of examined components has occured, which implies that the investigated slag is not entirely chemically inert.
