Integrating ELF into ELT: Comparative insights from Croatia and Finland
ELF as English that exists in its own right (Jenkins 2007) and as an activity type that emerges through interlocutors’ accommodation, negotiation and co-construction in the immediate communicative environment (cf. Dewey 2014 ; Park and Wee 2011 ; Seidlhofer 2009) calls for a change in the conceptualisation of the content, process and goals of ELT (cf. Cogo and Pitzl 2016 ; Drljača Margić and Vodopija-Krstanović forthcoming). The aims of the present study were to enquire into the respondents’ perceptions of the current state of ELT in their respective educational contexts and to investigate their attitudes and suggestions regarding the integration of ELF into ELT. The sample comprised 174 secondary-school students: 96 from Tampere, Finland, and 78 from Rijeka, Croatia. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire. The findings show that both groups of students hold that too much focus on native-speaker grammar and pronunciation in ELT in their schools diverts attention from the development of communicative skills, students’ familiarisation with English language diversity and their preparedness for interaction in English with interlocutors from various lingua-cultural backgrounds.
