Creative Movement as an Incentive for Students' Holistic Development

Innovations in the field of modern education are directed towards the holistic development of students, equally encouraging cognitive, affective and psychomotor development of every child. Creative movement as a teaching method includes the holistic development of the child, using movement to express, form and create different educational content, as well as thoughts and feelings of the student. It encourages students’ development through movement, guiding them and involving them in the learning process by applying bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, developing their spatial awareness, cooperation with others, developing higher-order thinking and observing the artistic expressions of others. The value of the creative movement method is especially emphasized in the contemporary educational context because research dealing with the brain, mind and body found significant relations between movement and learning. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present the possibilities of implementing the creative movement method in order to contribute to its understanding in the contemporary educational context. Through this lens, the integration of the creative movement in different subjects, school curriculum activities and cross-curricular topics is considered. The creative movement method contributes to the didactic-methodological pluralism of contemporary teaching and it is necessary to use it appropriately in accordance with the learning objective and learning outcomes with respect to the students’ and teacher’s experiences. Considering its advantages, it is necessary to give it more time and space in schools, while the pedagogical challenge would be the professional development of teachers and cooperation with dance artists and experts.
