THE CHALLENGES BEHIND SOLUTIONS: AN INSIGHT FROM VARIOUS VIEWPOINTS OF SUPRAMOLECULAR PHYSICAL CHEMISTS

The lecture will cover the recent investigations of the solvent effect on the thermodynamics of various host-guest complexation reactions conducted within the Supramolecular Physical Chemistry Group at the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science in Zagreb. The studied systems include various cation and/or anion receptors (calixarenes, cyclopeptides, and amine-, amide- and (thio)urea-based ligands) and macrocyclic hosts (cyclodextrins and cucurbiturils) capable of binding various non- polar species in water and strongly hydrogen- bonded organic solvents. Comprehensive studies of several complexation reactions involving representative examples from the mentioned host classes will be described, and the obtained thermodynamic data (complex stability constants and derived reaction Gibbs energies, reaction enthalpies and entropies) will be correlated with the structural results. The influence of various host- and guest-related parameters (size, structure, functionalization, and charge) and particularly the solvent effect will be discussed in detail. A significant part of the lecture will be dedicated to complexation reactions taking place in water. A new class of water-soluble glycocalixarenes designed for efficient binding of first group cations in water will be presented. The recent investigations of the temperature effect on the inclusion of various aliphatic and aromatic guests within cyclodextrins and cucurbiturils will be addressed. The influence of guest and cavity dehydration on the standard thermodynamic complexation parameters will be revealed and rationalized. The results of investigations dealing with solvophobically driven inclusion in structured organic solvents will be compared with those of the corresponding studies in water. The obtained results reveal how immense, complex, and challenging to explain the solvent effect on the binding ability of various hosts can be. With this respect, the detailed thermodynamic and structural investigations of processes taking place in various media should be a prerequisite for optimization of current, and targeted design of new, more efficient, and selective supramolecular receptors.
