PPP method and CROPOS network in the assessment of kinematic effects and permanent displacement of December 2020 Petrinja earthquakes’

On December 29th 2020 the wider area on the town of Petrinja was hit by a devastating M6.4 earthquake. The effects of the earthquake were felt by humans in the area up to 600 km away from the epicenter. In the epicentral area the Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) was up to 50 cm/s causing strong shaking. The effects of the earthquake were assessed by a permanent GNSS station SISA in Sisak, 14 km away from the epicenter. Station SISA belongs to CROPOS, the Croatian national permanent GNSS network, collecting observations of all global systems: GPS, GLO, GAL and BDS. 1-second observation data converted to RINEX format was processed by a Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method in static and kinematic mode. Just 6 seconds after the earthquake origin, its effects were registered by the SISA GNSS station. The results were analyzed showing the scatter of position in the area 37.5 cm x 36.5 cm, whereas the vertical shaking was in the range from -7.1 cm to +6.6 cm. Upon analysis, strong shaking was estimated to have lasted for 29 seconds, Peak Ground Velocity was estimated to 27.8 cm/s, and the average speed of the earthquake P-wave was estimated to 2.8 km/s. In addition to the strong shaking, the earthquake has caused a co-seismic permanent displacement estimated to 5.5 cm heading to SE direction, along with the subsidence of station estimated to 2.5 cm.
