Designing Modular Learning Factory Concept at The FMENA Zagreb - a Case Study

The Croatian economy leans heavily on tourism, with challenges in industrial productivity and a lack of workforce. With the highly dynamic environment, the only way to stay competitive is to implement Industry 4.0 digital technologies. However, like all new initiatives, the implementation of Industry 4.0 creates resistance due to aversion to the new and untested, and due to lack of information. To solve the problem of resistance, it is necessary to educate employees and expand their awareness of modern technologies. One of the tools used for education can be the Learning Factory (LF). A learning factory is a highly complex educational environment that aims to present the genuine factory as realistically possible. Students, i.e., employees, learn first-hand by going through all the different parts of production on their own. This study illustrates the methodology developed and used to select functional operation units or modules for a learning factory set up in a university environment. The development of the learning factory setup was accomplished by examining possible manufacturing modules and crossreferencing them with market needs. The result is a functional and modular learning factory concept that can be expanded by machine learning and computer vision. The novelty of this study is a searchable repository of existing Learning Factory setups worldwide.
