The Association of Smartphone use with Children's Well-being and School Achievement
Due to contradictory findings in the literature about the impact of digital technology use on children’s development and the increasing prevalence of digital devices use among children, more empirical research is needed. The aim of this study was to examine the association of smartphone use among children with their well-being and school achievement. The sample included children from 5th to 8th grade from different elementary schools in Croatia. Data on smartphone use were collected using a questionnaire designed for the purpose of this study. The PANAS-SF (Mackinnon et al., 1999) was used for measuring positive and negative affect, and the Brief Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (Seligson et al., 2003) for measuring life satisfaction. The data reported here are part of the study of a wider research project named “Digital technology in the family: patterns of behaviour and effects on child development” (D.E.C.I.D.E.). Results indicate that excessive smartphone use is related to lower well-being and school achievement among children. Implications for future research and recommendations for smartphone use among school aged children are discussed.
