Influence of natural aging on the mechanical properties of high-pressure die casting AlSi9Cu3(Fe)/MWCNT nanocomposites

The natural or artificial aging process or stabilization annealing can be used to improve the dimensional stability of AlSi9Cu3(Fe) castings, to achieve better mechanical properties while an increase in the mechanical properties is the consequence of the precipitation hardening of the material. In this work influence of natural aging on the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3(Fe) matrix nanocomposites prepared by adding 0.05 wt.% of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in high pressure die casting machine before piston or mixing directly into alloy was investigated. Chemical content was determined by optical emission spectroscopy. Tensile properties after casting and after 2 years of aging were determined by a tensile test at the universal testing machine. Metallographic analysis was carried out by optical microscope and field-emission scanning electron microscope. Hardiness was determined by the Vickers method. Results showed a significant increase in tensile strength due to natural aging.
