Aquifer testing as a prerequisite for installation of groundwater heat pump system: A case study from the city of Prelog

Heat pumps are no longer a mystery. The most common types of heat pumps are air-source, ground- source (geothermal) and water source heat pumps. There is currently a period of intensive installation of heat pumps on the Croatian territory to use renewable energy sources. Considering that the alluvial areas of northern Croatia are rich in groundwater, the utilisation of groundwater is becoming increasingly popular for heating and cooling buildings. The groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system assembly design requires detailed knowledge of local hydrogeology and understanding of hydraulics, which is involved in exploitation and water exchange in the heating- cooling system. The characteristics of the aquifer from which the groundwater is pumped have a significant impact on the design of the GWHP, and they need to be quality identified by groundwater research. In order to define the methodological investigation procedure, this paper presents an example of testing the pumping and recharging well by pumping tests. Wells are an integral part of the GWHP, which is intended for the individual needs of a production facility in the area of Međimurje County, i.e. the city of Prelog. For the needs of this research, precise electronic sensors with data loggers were installed inside the wells. In addition, the pumping test of the discharging well is conducted at the test site. Three testing procedures are applied: a constant, step-drawdown, and recovery test. It is important to note that the last-mentioned test is often neglected. The water level and discharge rate are recorded. The well test analysis software calculates the aquifer parameters. Geological and hydrogeological conditions at the site are highly favourable regarding the groundwater temperature and aquifer parameters. The pumping test results of the case study showed that the recovery test is the most accurate in assessing the hydrogeological parameters of the aquifer and should not be neglected when testing aquifers.
