Devising a method of teaching artist interview to conservation-restoration students
An artist interview is an effective tool in the collection of information about artworks, from the materials and methods of their making to how they are intended to look. This information is essential in the planning and execution of conservation-restoration treatments, as well as for the proper care and display of art. The first part of this paper presents a historical background to the idea of collecting information from the artists themselves that can help guide conservation-restoration decisions. The second and most extensive part of the paper provides a description of the development of a method to teach artist interview to students. As a part of this process, two Split-based conceptual artists, Vedran Perkov and Viktor Popović, were interviewed. To illustrate the nature and the amount of information that can be collected through an artist interview, a summary of the two interviews with Perkov is provided.
