The influence of Zvonimir Wyroubal (1900 – 1990) on the development of the conservation-restoration profession in Croatia from the 1940s to the 1960s

This paper presents the work of the Croatian conservator-restorer Zvonimir Wyroubal (1900 – 1990) who in 1942, with the help of Vladimir Tkalčić, director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, founded the Museum's conservation- restoration studio – the first public conservation-restoration studio in Croatia. The expansion of the studio under Wyroubal’s headship marked the beginning of the development of conservation-restoration profession in Croatia. During his work at the Museum, Wyroubal set up the first conservation-restoration exhibition in the country (1946). In 1948, the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts took over the Museum’s studio and transformed it into its Restoration Institute. The Restoration Institute of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts is the predecessor of the Croatian Conservation-Restoration Institute – the central state agency for conservation-restoration in today’s Croatia. Wyroubal was appointed director of the newly established institution, and kept that position until his retirement in the 1960s. The Restoration Institute covered the territory of the whole Croatia and was entrusted with the treatment of the most valuable artworks. It provided training for heritage professionals from Croatia and other republics of the former Yugoslavia, and contributed to the forming of conservation-restoration studios outside Zagreb. From the very beginning there was an idea of having a conservation-restoration school which Wyroubal would also be in charge of, but that idea did not come to fruition.
