Crisis communication and vulnerable groups during a pandemic
Every emergency requires crisis communication, which has become evident with the current pandemic crisis. Crisis communication is perceived as an innate or learned skill, however it is much more than that, especially in healthcare management. A prerequisite for successful communication in crises is accurate and timely presentation of facts, empathy and trust. Apart from conveying information, this type of communication must be directed towards certain groups, the most important of which are vulnerable ones. Although the list of vulnerable groups depends on situation and level of risk, women, children and adolescents, elderly, people with disabilities, the homeless, people with mental and chronic illnesses and people living in shelters are considered vulnerable in every crisis, including a pandemic. Each of these groups has its own characteristics, which make it necessary to create crisis communication with the intention and goal of addressing a specific vulnerable group. Bearing that in mind, specific risks of each vulnerable group are determined in order to decrease possible damage.
