Glioblastoma multiforme in a three-year-old hunting dog

Glioblastoma multiforme (astrocytoma grade IV) is the most malignant primary CNS tumor of astrocytic origin. It affects older dogs and more frequently brachycephalic breeds. While it is the most common primary CNS tumor in humans, glioblastoma is rarely diagnosed in dogs. A three-year-old Serbian Hound was presented with an altered mental status and painful movements of the head. As the dog did not react to treatment, it was euthanized and submitted for necropsy to exclude infectious disease as cause of illness. Gross findings included congestion of parenchymal organs and pulmonary edema. The right frontal lobe of the brain was enlarged with a 3mm discoloration on the ventral part. On the cut surface a white colored nodule with black to dark red rim was infiltrating the brain parenchyma, 35mm in diameter, poorly demarcated from adjacent tissue, and compressing the adjacent white matter. Histopathology revealed a non-encapsuleted, poorly- circumscribed and diffusely infiltrative neoplasia with marked glial pseudo-palisading and glomeruloid vascular proliferation with multifocal areas of necrosis. The neoplasia was composed of spindle cells with round nuclei, eosinophilic cytoplasm, pronounced anisokaryosis and anisocytosis. Based on microscopic and clinical findings, a diagnosis of glioblastoma multiforme was made. Glioblastoma multiforme is a rare neoplasm compromising about 5% of canine astrocytomas. Average age of affected dogs is 6-12 years, but this tumor was also reported in a 7-month-old Golden Retriever. We present a case of this rare tumor in a young dog which highlights the importance of considering brain tumors as differentials even in young dogs.
