T-cell lymphoma in a captive pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea)

The pygmy marmoset is a small New World monkey native to rainforests in South America. Outside of its natural habitat it can be found in zoos and, rarely, as laboratory animal and pet. Pathology and disease are rarely reported for pygmy marmosets with colonic adenocarcinoma and B-cell lymphoma being the only neoplasia reported from these animals. A captive 4.5-year-old male pygmy marmoset was delivered for necropsy. The animal showed dyspnea 3 days prior to death and was treated with antibiotics with no improvement. On necropsy, severe generalized lymphadenopathy and non congestive splenomegaly were noted. On cut surface, lymph nodes were white with no visible structure, while the spleen showed numerous white follicles. The lungs were also enlarged, white and hard, and did not float in formalin. Histology revealed a round cell neoplasia diffusely infiltrating all lymph nodes, forming numerous follicles within the spleen and infiltrating the lungs, liver, intestine, adrenal gland, kidney and bone marrow. Neoplastic cells were positive for CD3, while they were negative for CD79, hence a multicentric T-cell lymphoma was diagnosed. The incidence of neoplasia in nonhuman primates generally has been considered to be low, and to the authors’ knowledge only colonic adenocarcinoma and herpesvirus induced B-cell lymphoma has been reported for pygmy marmosets. We report a T-cell lymphoma which caused death in a captive, middle- aged pygmy marmoset.
