Novel squaraine-based organic systems for application in organic photovoltaic devices

Squaraines (SQs), since the first report in 1991, are regarded as candidates for constituents of the next-generation photovoltaics and are extensively investigated. SQs are generally low cost organic photo absorbers, showing a set of remarkable properties such as intense and sharp absorption band at NIR region, high photostability and good intramolecular charge transfer. Here we present the results of the development of novel SQs with different donor groups to serve as candidates suitable for photoabsorbing materials in organic photovoltaic devices. The derived SQs were prepared in solution, processed into thin-film configuration and to self-standing bulk heterojunction (BHJ) thin-films in conjunction with fullerene-based electron acceptors which were characterised by cyclic voltammetry, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and by profilometry.
