Preserving the Invisible: Multi-Analytical Research of the Missale Olomucense Incunabulum
A study combining different microscopic, spectroscopic, and photo-graphic techniques has been done to characterise original materials and assess the state of preservation of a page having an illuminated initial from Missale Olomucense, an incunabulum printed in 1499 in Nuremberg. To determine the most adequate conservation method for the incunabulum heavily damaged by microorganisms, it was important to characterise the materials from which the book parts were made. Broad interdisciplinary research on the painted and gilded initial was conducted. Chosen techniques were all non-invasive and included light microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), and Raman molecular spectroscopy together with VIS/UV/NIR photography. Results have shown a common mediaeval painters’ palette and technique. Research has also shed new light on how the initial would originally have looked before the optical features of pigments altered.
