Intrauterine CMV infection and brain: a case report
Introduction/Objectives: The most common cause of intrauterine infection producing congenital brain damage is Cytomegalo virus infection (CMV). Although the CMV antibodies can be detected in significant number of pregnant women, the primary infections during pregnancy are rare. Therefore it is not common practice to test the pregnant women for acute CMV infections. Most of the babies are asymptomatic at birth. Simptoms and signs include: jaundice, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, microcephaly, sensorineural deafness, chorioretinitis, petechiae, seizures or variable levels of intellectual disability. Participants, Materials/Methods: We present a baby with developmental anomalies due to infection with CMV. Results: The features of brain abnormalities are: microcephaly, ventriculomegaly and subarachnoid space enlargement, delayed myelination, with migrational abnormalities. Conclusions: The degree of neurological impairment from intrauterine CMV infection is variable, from mild learning and behavioral problems to intellectual disability and physical handicaps.
