Diabetes mellitus-A Risk Factor for Cardiovascular Disease
Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of vascular lesions, especially cardiovascular and cerebrovascular, and can thus give rise to myocardial infarction and stroke. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the population of Zagreb and Croatia, using data on the use of outpatient and inpatient health care facilities in the City of Zagreb and in Croatia as a whole. Proper registration of diabetes related morbidity and mortality is complicated by the disease being frequently masked by cardiovascular and other chronic degenerative diseases. So, mortality statistics underestimates the proportion of diabetes related deaths. In Zagreb, diabetes related morbidity and mortality are on an increase, and so are the respective hospital stay and number of hospital days, whereas the mean length of hospital stay due to diabetes has been reduced. As coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in diabetic patients, and as many as 10% of these patients undergo partial or total extremity amputations, health care measures should be focused not only on the prevention and early detection of diabetes mellitus but also on the prevention of the development of late diabetes complications.
