Regulating new gene editing techniques in the EU
A European Commission study on new genetic techniques published on 29 April 2021, immediately after publication, sparked controversy and political conflict between the European Commission and the European Parliament over the authorization of new seed varieties of genetically modified crops. As the European Commission plans to draw up a new legislative framework to allow the sowing of crops resulting from new genome-editing techniques, it is clear that a new era of struggle to preserve Europe's fields from genetically modified crops is imminent. In the presentation, we will clarify the political and scientific context and controversies that are happening in drafting a new legal framework for the regulation of GMO regulation in the EU.
