Symptoms of Eating Disorders in Women's Group Sports: Aesthetic vs. Non-Aesthetic

Previous research suggest that female athletes are a group particularly at risk for developing eating disorder symptoms or engaging in unhealthy behaviors to control their weight, which could be higher compared to leanness and non-leanness group sports. The aim of our research was to explore the eating disorder symptoms in rhythmic gymnast’s athletes using the EAT-26 test. Therefore, we wanted to compare rhythmic gymnasts with athletes of non-leanness, so we included a group of female handball players. Rhythmic gymnastics is a conventional sport in which is perform on the floor with the hand apparatuses as rope, hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon in harmony with music. Participants were rhythmic gymnasts (N=40) and female handball players (N=40) both aged 14-17. EAT-26 with 26 items under three subscales (‘Dieting’, ‘Bulimia and Food Preoccupation’, ‘Oral Control’) was used to test the presence of eating disorder symptoms. Results of the Mann Whitney U Test showed significant differences between the two groups in EAT-26 total score. Comparing the eating attitudes symptoms of age and body-mass-index (BMI) revealed that rhythmic gymnasts are more associated with significantly higher dieting and restricting/purging scores.
