Sexting and sexual satisfaction in emerging adults
This study aimed to assess if sexting and sexual activity had comparable effects on sexual satisfaction among emerging adults. If sexting and sexual activity are interchangeable, then each of their effects on sexual satisfaction should be of the same direction (i.e., either positive or negative) and comparable in size. In addition, we assessed if the relationship between sexting and sexual satisfaction is moderated by relationship status and sexual activity. We used a national sample of 607 Croatian adults aged 18 to 25 years (M = 21.94, SD = 1.90 ; 53.9% women) who completed an online questionnaire in January 2021. Moderating effects of relationship status and sexual activity were assessed. In multivariable analysis, sexting was related to sexual satisfaction only among study participants who were not sexually active. In contrast to enhancing sexual satisfaction among singles in our study, sexting was negatively associated with sexual satisfaction among study participants in relationships. The results suggest that the link between sexting and sexual satisfaction may be about sexual activity and offer evidence on the role of sexting in sexual satisfaction among emerging adults who cannot or do not want to engage in sexual intercourse.
