KRATKOROČNA UČINKOVITOST VADBENIH PROGRAMOV SPECIALNE OLIMPIJADE NA MIŠIČNO JAKOST, ANTROPOMETRIČNE SPREMENLJIVKE IN TELESNO SESTAVO ŠPORTNIKOV Z MOTNJO V DUŠEVNEM RAZVOJU S PRIDRUŽENIMI MOTNJAMI
Introduction: Neurophysiotherapists face the challenge of providing appropriate support to vulnerable groups of Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities and other associated disorders in the process of interdisciplinary habilitation in improving muscle strength, anthropometric variables and body composition parameters. The purpose of our study was to investigate the shortterm impact of two four-month exercise programs on muscle strength (Handgrip test, Push up test (PUT) anthropometric variables (upper arm circumference-AC) and body composition parameters of Special Olympics athletes with increased body mass index (BMI) and poor methods of manual dynamometry. Methods: We conducted a double-blind stratified randomized clinical study in which 100 Special Olympics athletes were randomly assigned to two study groups, namely fun fitness (N = 50) and wellness group (N = 50). Body composition, anthropometric variables, hand grip dynamometry and functional test to measure arm and shoulder girdle muscle strength (push up test PUT) were performed at the beginning and end of a 4-month study approved by the Commission for Medical Ethics of the Republic of Slovenia (No. 0120-598 / 2017). Results: Based on the analysis of quantitative results, we find that there were statistically significant differences in the results in functional tests, upper arm circumference (AC) as body mass index (BMI) in both groups. The statistically significant difference in pre and post test results is greater in the Fun Fitness group than in the Wellness group, in the three tests (Handgrip test, PUT and AC). There was a statistically significant decrease in BMI in the athletes in the Fun Fitness program, and a slight increase in the value of the BMI in the Wellness group. Conclusion: The existing study contributes to a deeper understanding of the short-term effectiveness of two Special Olympics programs, where the fun fitness program was accompanied by function-oriented exercise training within an individually set neurophysiotherapy program) to reduce BMI in athletes who had elevated BMI in the pre-test phase (preadiposity), as poorer results of functional tests and measurements of anthropometric variables.
