Pronoun ambiguity resolution: Tracking eye-movements of Croatian speakers

In everyday communication, speakers are constantly confronted with the resolution of ambiguities. One of these ambiguities is pronoun ambiguity. In recent decades, pronoun ambiguity resolution has attracted a considerable amount of interest in psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and theoretical linguistics. In psycholinguistics, the most studied is the third person pronoun. Theoretical approaches to this phenomenon differ in terms of the factors they focus on. On the one hand, structural factors (i.e., the grammatical role of the antecedent, pronoun dropping) are considered most important, and on the other hand, semantic factors (i.e., the implicit causality bias, coherence relations). Previous studies conducted in pro-drop languages have found cross- linguistic differences in pronoun ambiguity resolution preferences. However, these studies are methodologically limited. The interaction of structural and semantic factors in pronoun ambiguity resolution during language processing has not been studied in-depth. In this talk, we will present the study of third-person pronoun ambiguity resolution in Croatian, a pro-drop language, with respect to structural and semantic factors. In this study, an eye-tracking (reading paradigm) is used as an online method to investigate the pronoun ambiguity resolution in language processing. An eye-tracking is combined with a questionnaire in the form of a forced- choice task. Linguistic and methodological aspects of the study will be discussed in more detail.
