Setting the scene: the changing contexts of teacher education in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond

So much of the existing literature on the topic of teacher education in Europe is dominated by western European countries and perspectives, often assumed as a proxy for the whole continent (Silova, Rappleye, and Y. You, 2020). However, living, researching, and teaching in Central and Eastern Europe, we were highly aware of our region’s own history — how it differs from the rest of the continent, but also how it presents unique sets of both problems and opportunities. Although, as noted above, CEE teacher education has been a focus of some studies published so far, most of these efforts generally frame education trends in our part of the world as being ‘in transformation’ as a default. In 2021, we think that this lens is outdated and assumes an (unspoken) narrative whereby western European countries are setting the pace and eastern European countries can only ever be slow to catch up. Therefore this book does not seek to prove the worthiness of eastern European teacher education systems against the metric of western European teacher education systems, but rather offer an alternative, more balanced perspective completely — one where CEE countries are presented on their own terms, in their own voices.
