Development of modern systems for thermal analysis and assesment of cast iron melts quality
Thermal analysis is normally used to determine carbon equivalent (CE), carbon and silicon content in cast iron melt, or in other words, to act as a replacement for chemistry. To identify the additional information that could be extracted from such analysis, expert systems have been developed in which thermal analysis data were correlated to the physical phenomena occurring during the solidification and the solid state transformation. This data may be used to control the process and ensure the manufacture of casting with the desired final properties. The objective of this paper is to review the thermo-analytical techniques to verify and optimize melting and treatment processes, especially for gray and ductile iron.
