The diabetic kidney
Diabetic nephropathy has become a major cause of chronic renal failure and end-stage renal disease in developed countries. In both types of diabetes— insulin dependent (type 1) and non-insulin dependent (type 2)—the patient progresses to nephropathy, so early diagnosis and initiation of treatment are necessary, as well as early diagnosis of microalbuminuria. Ultrasound examination is the first imaging technique used in pathological changes of the urogenital system. The conventional grayscale (mode B) provides information on the morphology of the kidneys, while the color-power Doppler and the spectral analysis provide information on the vascularization and the resistance of the renal vessel flows.
