Field analyses of young people’s cultural socialisation and participation (Croatia)

This report presents the main findings of multiple correspondence analyses (MCA) of the CHIEF online survey data conducted among secondary students (N = 2148) from a nonprobability purposive sample of 28 Croatian secondary schools as additional and complementary analyses to the descriptive and correlational analyses already conducted and described within the Croatian national survey report (Franc, Sučić, Pavlović, Maglić, and Milas, 2021). In this report, our focus is on young people’s cultural participation and its determinants, intending to further explore young people’s cultural participation. Specifically, our aim is to develop a locally specific typology of young people’ss’ patterns of cultural participation and to investigate the relative effects of selected sources/determinants of cultural literacy at the individual, school, and location levels. Out of the total of 25 indicators of individual cultural participation from the CHIEF survey, for the purpose of the analyses, we selected 19 indicators, and the following variables we investigated as potential determinants: gender, parents’ attained level of education, type of school programme (grammar or vocational) and urbanisation profile of students’ residence. In terms of new insights regarding a typology of young people’s patterns of cultural participation, with the MCA, we were able to identify two dimensions of participation (one dominantly determined by participation in activities reflecting participation in high cultural activities and a second principally denoting participation in non-socialising individual activities). Although these two dimensions enabled us to identify four types of students concerning their patterns of participation, it should be noted that the majority of our participants seem to be concentrated somewhat below the mid- point of the second dimension. However, our results indicate that a relatively small portion of surveyed students usually does not participate in more common cultural activities, especially those which implies socialising with friends or parents. In terms of the determinants of student cultural participation, the findings of the MCA, similarly to previous Croatian findings as well as results of correlation analyses of CHIEF survey data conducted within the Croatian national survey report (Franc et al., 2021), confirmed student gender, type of school programme and parental level of education asrelevant determinants of patterns of participation.
