Investing in digitalization to preserve cultural heritage: examples from the Republic of Croatia

Numerous EU documents, regulations, and policies point to the need to invest in digitalization and digital transformation of education, economy, public management, art, and culture. The process of digitalization assumed even more urgency due to the recent and still ongoing pandemic crisis which clearly showed the necessity to implement information and communication technologies into all human activity, to enable human progress and functioning, and overcome the globally imposed restrictions of movement. This paper aims to show that digitalization of cultural heritage – a strategic goal in itself – can also produce a positive impact on a range of activities, such as innovation, tourism, education, publishing, advertising, etc. Examples of digitalized cultural heritage in Croatia are used to show how this process can aid in promoting various European regions, as well as cultural diversity, and contribute to the overall increase in the quality of life. Digitalization is explained as an extremely complex, interdisciplinary process that changes not only the methods of artistic expression, but also the perception of artistic artefacts, and that of the role and the place of art and culture in modern society. Hence, culture appears to be assuming traits of the new, digital media, which is why its present-day understanding comes with the requirement to create and to apply new theoretical and methodological concepts adapted to the new circumstances.
