The Role of Food in the Rhythm of Civil Private Time

The journals of Josip Antun Turković, Ivan and Irma Govorković, and Franjo pl. Ciraki provide an excellent illustration of the patterns of civil social life that shape the culturological matrix of a given time in history. Their value lies, in particular, in the fact that they are written from the point of view of the persons who experienced the events described in the journals, and actively participated in some of them. The subjects of their writing provide typical representations of the microhistory of their time: family, food, festivals and folks customs, illness, work and leisure, etc. The most detailed journal entries, however, are dedicated to the ceremonious menus served at major meals, which can be interpreted as civil dining room ceremonies belonging to the private time rhythm, or as cuisine as a noble art. The paper examines the relationships between food, culture, and identity in the context of journals written by Josip Antun Turković, Ivan and Irma Govorković, and Franjo pl. Ciraki. The journal entries dedicated to food reflect the space and the time in which the recipes in question were created and circulated. They provide evidence of needs and opportunities, personal life frameworks and economic circumstances, levels of culinary skill, and the availability of ingredients and their cultural and symbolic content ; they shape the economics of the household, the division of jobs and chores, good health, gender roles and social relations such as hospitality, shaping the thesis that repetition is not a routine in this civil space ; rather, it transforms an individual habit into a ritual of sorts.
