Business survival during multiple external shocks: the case of migrant entrepreneurs and digital nomads in Croatia

This paper examines the obstacles faced by the immigrant entrepreneurs and digital nomads in Croatia that are mainly caused by the recent circumstances at the national and at the global level. These include COVID-19 pandemic and its implications, the effects of Brexit, several natural disasters and changes in Croatian Law on Foreigners. In addition, it seeks to identify the key survival factors of the immigrant entrepreneurs and digital nomads in times of afore- mentioned demanding conditions in 2020 and 2021. The analysis is based on the secondary sources, i. e. media articles. In general, immigrant entrepreneurs are shown to be more innovative and entrepreneurial than native entrepreneurs. Moreover, they are more likely to identify and develop new business niches and initiate 'spillover effects' for local entrepreneurs. Yet, the migrants are usually more vulnerable than the locals in times of crisis. This research aims to contribute to three literature gaps. First, it aims to depict the most recent barriers faced by migrant entrepreneurs and digital nomads in Croatia, with an emphasis on legal and socioeconomic aspects during multiple external shocks. Second, it identifies and elaborates on the key business survival factors of the immigrant entrepreneurs in times of multiple shocks. Third, it analyses the media coverage of immigrant entrepreneurs and digital nomads related to COVID 19 crisis and other recent shocks.
