Assessment of the life cycle of municipal solid waste management systems: a case study of the City of Dubrovnik
Due to changes in economic development, tourism, and higher consumption, the daily per capita municipal solid waste generation in the City of Dubrovnik is expected to rise. Dubrovnik's garbage largely ends up in landfills, with only a little fraction collected and recovered independently. To minimize negative effects on the environment and society as a whole, it is vital to assess the environmental implications of waste management processes, goods, and services throughout their entire cycles. Using the life cycle assessment software Integrated Waste Management Model, this report examined the City of Dubrovnik's municipal solid waste management system. Integral waste management entails taking a holistic view of waste's life cycle and mobility in the environment to achieve optimal waste management through economic, social, and territorial integration, as well as a high level of health and environmental protection. Based on solid waste management generation rates, waste composition data, collection, treatment, and disposal for 2019, the municipal waste management system of the City of Dubrovnik was analyzed, and four municipal waste management variants were considered for achieving the EU Waste Directives' objectives. The analysis and comparison of the environmental impacts of four waste management variants attempted to highlight key differences in waste management to propose guidelines for developing an efficient municipal waste management system for cities and communities to be sustainable, healthy, and inclusive.
