War heroes, role models and controversies - the expression of patriotism among Bad Blue Boys
This paper presents the results of the ethnographic research of the Bad Blue Boys, the ultras group supporting GNK Dinamo Zagreb. In this research using ethnographic content analysis (Altheide 1987), we analyzed ultras messages expressed on banners and shown at home and away games over the past ten football seasons. By analyzing the research results, we created a typology of ultras messages. Within the typology, there are political contents and contents used to strengthen the collective identity in which patriotism is one of the fundamental domains. The mentioned categories are closely related to the identification of the Bad Blue Boys with the values they see in Croatian war heroes. The heroes highlighted by the ultras often overlap with the official historical narratives of the mainstream society, but controversial military units and historical figures are also often emphasized. We can interpret patriotism as a tradition of this ultras group whose members participated in the Homeland War, the key theme of the Bad Blue Boys' patriotic iconography.
