The Use of Antibiotics in Zagreb Area During 2001.
During last decade antibiotics were one of the most prescribed drugs. Unfortunately they are inadequately used and hailed as miracle drugs. According to the report of the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance antibiotics were the most prescribed group. From 2001 we collect data of ATC antibiotics sales from 33 pharmacy units in Zagreb. All ambulatory care drugs were collected using ATC/DDD methodology of WHO. We expressed results in DDD per 1000 inhabitants per day. The total use of antibiotics was 52.84 DDD/1000 inhabitants/day. That is very high consumption comparing with other date. The use of antibiotics in Zagreb is higher than in other European countries. Specially is large use of broad spectrum of antibiotics (amoxicillin + clavulanate). These all drugs present a significant financial burden for our health insurance.
