Do the level of obstruction and staging of COPD modify determinants of aortic stiffness?
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate relationship between levels of obstruction and different grades of COPD with variables of arterial stiffness. RESULTS: Level of obstruction in COPD is significantly related to PWVAO (r=0496. p<0.001) This relationship follows the regression line y=9.39+0.92x, which clearly shows that AS will be in physiological range in the absence of obstruction. PWVAO is significantly related to ABCD grade of COPD (rs=0.257, p=0.047). CONCLUSIONS: COPD patients with higher levels of obstruction have higher AS. Critically elevated PWVA0 can be measured already at obstruction level 1 and rises for 0.92 m/s for every further level. This finding has significant implication for CV risk assessment in COPD patients.
