Gene therapy: concept, current status, moral and ethical aspects
To date, many diseases of genetic origin remain untreated. A potential approach to the treatment of genetic disorders in man is gene therapy, a technique whereby the absent of faulty gene is replaced by a working one, so that body can make the correct protein and consequently eliminate the root cause of the disease. The fundamental issue of gene therapy is the problem of introducing the therapeutic DNA or RNA into correct cell or tissue and subsequent expression of the protein in the host. However, this is far from to be resolved question, being therefore the main hurdle in gene therapy application. Novel therapeutic approaches are required that offer greater potential and selectivty and that act by mechanisms that are not the subject to cross-resistance when combine with tandart therapies.
