Grasslands of the NATURA 2000 area Vejalnica and Krč
The NATURA 2000 area Vejalnica and Krč (HR2001298) is located on the eastern slopes of the Medvednica mountain and partly covers the area of the Signiicant landscape Goranec. It is characterized by its still well- preserved dry continental grasslands (class Festuco-Brometea - important orchid site) where many species grow, that are protected by law and some of them are endangered. In general, the goal of an ecological network is to preserve or re-establish favorable conditions of endangered and rare species, and natural and semi-natural habitat types. The irst step in this, as well as in monitoring, is to survey the overall condition and acquire insight into the vegetation and lora of grasslands and their succession phases. To analyse and deine vegetation of the NATURA 2000 area Vejalnica and Krč, during May and June 2018, 19 vegetation relevés were made in accordance with the Braun-Blanquet method, using an extended scale. During July lora was additionally recorded at the same locations where vegetation relevés were made. A total of 182 plant taxa were recorded, of which ive are strictly protected by law (Anacamptis pyramidalis, Anemone sylvestris, Dianthus giganteus ssp. croaticus, Gymnadenia conopsea, Listera ovata Anemone) and according to IUCN Red list one is critically endangered ( sylvestris Dianthus giganteus croaticus Anacamptis pyramidalis), one vulnerable ( ssp. ) and one near threatened ( ). One invasive species ( ) was also recorded. The analysis of grassland vegetation established thatErigeron annuus the area of Vejalnica and Krč is dominated by dry grassland vegetation, with the largest share of elements of the Bromion erecti alliance. However, overgrowing elements were observed on most of these grasslands (shrubby forms of deciduous woody species and a signiicant amount of ). Habitat types with a reducedJuniperus communis share of grassland species (alliance ) have also been identiied. To preserve open habitat typesGeranion sanguinei and target species of the investigated area, it is recommended to remove most of the woody species recorded in these habitats and to introduce mowing and controlled grazing. This would reduce the possibility of overgrowing and overshading the habitats, which the target species do not tolerate.
