Employment and Mobility of Lapicide and Marangoni in the Renaissance Adriatic: A View from Trogir

This paper aims to discuss the methodology of mapping within the discipline of the history of art and to promote the visualization of research results as a method that improves our understanding of the processes of the changes of the urban form in a Renaissance Adriatic city. Recent research in the Trogir Archives resulted in more than 600 documents revealing names of 182 builders, stonemasons and sculptors being active in the city during the 15th century. One-third of them originated from other places. For the first time, their activity in Trogir, as well as their mobility along and across the Adriatic, will be displayed by the maps produced from the GIS database. The database includes more than just the data from the documents–it also introduces hypothesis and attributions as outcomes resulting from the comparison of the archival data with all the available data from the period.
