Aristotle and Michael of Ephesus on the Deceptive Character of Dreams
One of the salient features of dreams is that we are deceived by them, we take our dreams to be real. Aristotle is alert to this feature and he discusses it in several passages of De insomniis. In the first part of this contribution, I examine the relevant passages and provide an interpretation of Aristotle’s explanation of the deceptive character of dreams. My interpretation has wider consequences for our understanding of Aristotle’s views on various cognitive capacities and their interaction. In the second part, I discuss the commentary on De insomniis by Michael of Ephesus. I present Michael’s interpretation of Aristotle’s take on the deceptive character of dreams, and I compare it with the interpretation I developed in the first part of this contribution.
