Religiosity and mental health in the COVID-19 pandemic era: a literature review

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the religious behaviour, beliefs, and attitudes of believers and consequently on their mental health and health outcomes. In this paper, a literature review is used as the research method. The synthesis of research findings on religiosity in relation to coronavirus disease shows that this area is becoming increasingly important. According to the literature analysed, studies argue positive religious coping and mental health among believers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, studies have identified the relationship between mental health and religiosity during global pandemics. It is emphasized that religiosity and spirituality play an important role in alleviating suffering and reducing stress, can affect health outcomes, and minimize the effects of social isolation. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the ability to engage in some religious practices. The main findings of this research will be the comparative analysis of different empirical scientific studies regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on religiosity and mental health. It is expected that the results will contribute to a better understanding of the behaviour of religious individuals or groups in times of crisis, such as the period of the COVID- 19 pandemic. Finally, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first analysis to provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the various religious beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours of religious groups during the coronavirus pandemic period.
