VALIDATION OF THE FAN TYPE SCALE IN CROATIA

The purpose of this paper is to examine the factor structure of the fan type scale in Croatia. The scale was translated into Croatian and administrated to 307 spectators during the Europa league match of a Croatian football club to answer a key research question: What is the underlying factor structure of the fan type scale? Past researches suggest a five and six factor structure (fanatical, devoted, local, dysfunctional, and temporary fans). The findings of the study present a 24-item three-factor fan type scale among which “passionate fan” appears as the most significant factor. The results provided new insights into the validity of the original version of the fan type scale. It is concluded that the Croatian adaptation of the fan type scale is a useful instrument for segmenting the sports market.
