The Croatian-Hungarian Settlement in the Ideology of the National Party (1883-1903)
This paper analyses different declarations of the National Party (speeches, newspaper articles…) and endeavours to ascertain what position the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement had in the ideology of the Party in the period 1883-1903 when the Party leader and Croatian Ban was Károly Khuen- Héderváry. Special attention is paid to Khuen- Héderváry and other prominent party members. The importance of the National Party in Croatian history of the second half of the 19th century is exceptional, which is evident in the fact that it was the ruling party for 33 years (1873–1906). One of the unusual features of the Party was that during Ban Khuen-Héderváry’s term of office it had no official, publicised political programme, but it most frequently invoked the Croatian-Hungarian Settlement as the foundation of its existence and activity.
