Ten years of plant myosin genetics
Ten years have passed since the cloning of the first plant myosin cDNA, ATM, from the flowering plant Arabidopsis. Now we know that plant myosins constitute a small family of actin-dependent motor proteins. Phylogenetic analysis groups plant myosins into 3 classes of unconventional myosins that, together with the other known non-plant myosins, currently form a large myosin superfamily of 18 classes. Despite an increasing amount of genetic data, little is known about the structure, enzymatic properties, intracellular distribution and physiology of most plant myosins. This review briefly summarises recent progress in plant myosin research with an effort to complement biochemical and immunological studies with genetical information.
