Problemi di trascrizione dei rilevamenti ALM čakavi e štokavi (Croazia, Montenegro)
As the Mediterranean Linguistic Atlas (ALM), after a forty years-long break, finally approaches publication, a few issues arise concerning the treatment of the original fieldwork data. This paper deals with Deanović’s transcriptions of the Čakavian and Štokavian material (sample points: Punat, Sali, Komiža, Korčula, Cavtat, and Muo). Whereas in the published versions of his research Deanović observed the principles of the Croatian phonological transcription, the ALM transcription system, as used in his fieldwork notebooks, overlooks the phonologically relevant prosodic features of the varieties concerned, with some sectors of the consonantism distorted. First, the interface between these two systems is examined, establishing the correspondences and the chronological primacy of the transcriptions in the local tradition. Secondly, while the fieldwork notebooks admittedly represent the primary source of reference for the publication of the ALM, it is argued that Deanović’s publications, as well as data external to the project, should be used to amend some apparent shortcomings. This is to be achieved by seizing the interpretative possibilities inherent to the ALM transcription system and largely contemplated by its modifications in the 1970s
