Critical heritage from below: Case of partisan hospital Drežnica
Situating her work in critical heritage studies and based on experimental interdisciplinary methodology applied on case studies in former Yugoslavia, Sanja Horvatinčić analyses the emancipatory potential of community based, self organized practices focused on socialist and revolutionary heritage that challenge or radically oppose authorized heritage discourse created after the violent and reactionary change of paradigm in post-socialist European context. Through direct action and intervention on memorial sites and objects, these practices emancipate and reinvigorate narratives embodied in them, while at the same time subverting the hegemonic discourse on national heritage in which official state and EU heritage institutions comply with and reproduce the dominant narratives about modernity, capitalism and colonialism.
